A Complete Guide to the Sky Lagoon in Iceland

Discover Iceland's recently unveiled seaside geothermal lagoon, mere moments from the heart of Reykjavík's city centre.

What is the Sky Lagoon in Iceland?

Similar to the longstanding thermal bath traditions of the Blue Lagoon and Secret Lagoon in Iceland, the Sky Lagoon offers a geothermal retreat for those seeking relaxation and revitalization. Uniquely positioned with a stunning vista overlooking the North Atlantic Sea, especially breathtaking at sunset, this lagoon opened its doors in 2021 and swiftly gained popularity among both locals and tourists. Despite being a man-made pool, the remarkable cliffside setting adorned with grottos creates an immersive experience reminiscent of nature's marvels. Moreover, the water is heated entirely through natural geothermal processes.

The Seven-Step Ritual

Icelandic tradition dictates that there is a certain seven step ritual that everyone must try when visiting the Secret Lagoon. It begins by simply relaxing in the lagoon and breathing in the refreshing ocean air. Step two: it’s time for a cold plunge. Awaken your senses in Iceland’s oldest pool and stimulate your immune system and reduce inflammation. Next, it’s time to visit the sauna to open pores, remove toxins and cleanse your skin.

Step four involves a cold mist mist. Balance the heat from the sauna by slowly stepping through an energising cold mist. Then, it’s time to exfoliate using the Sky Lagoon’s signature Sky Body Scrub. Slowly, you’ll feel the enlivening effects both inside and out. Wear the scrub into the steam for the best results. The steam room will open your pores once more, allowing your skin to absorb the key therapeutic elements of the Ritual. Finally, cleanse in a refreshing, gentle shower.

Where is the Sky Lagoon?

The Sky Lagoon in Iceland is located in Kópavogur, which is a municipality adjacent to Reykjavík. It’s just a 13 minutes drive from Reykjavik itself. There are several ways to get there including a local bus, walking, biking or by booking a dedicated Sky Lagoon tour which will collect you directly from your hotel and drop you off at the geothermal spa.
