Alternatives to the Blue Lagoon

With Iceland currently experiencing some volcanic eruptions in the vicinity of Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the world famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is temporarily closed.

Thankfully, this is the only closure you need to worry about. At the moment, all flights, hotels and tours are running as usual! But for those that were hoping to visit the Blue Lagoon in the near future, don’t worry, there are still many fantastic geothermal spas in the country worth a visit.

Here are four fantastic alternatives to the Blue Lagoon…

The Secret Lagoon

The Secret Lagoon in Iceland, also known locally as Gamla Laugin, is a stunning geothermal area where you can sit and relax in the rich natural resources of warm water which come directly from hot springs. Vaðmálahver, Básahver, or Litli Geysir, the latter being an active geyser viewable from the lagoon spouting a show every few minutes, provide 100% of the water supply in the lagoon. The water temperature is typically between 38-40° Celsius all year long. It is the perfect place to come and relax, especially after enjoying a trip around the famous Iceland Golden Circle.

The Sky Lagoon

Uniquely positioned with a stunning vista overlooking the North Atlantic Sea, especially breathtaking at sunset, the Sky Lagoon opened its doors in 2021 and swiftly gained popularity among both locals and tourists. Despite being a man-made pool, the remarkable cliffside setting adorned with grottos creates an immersive experience reminiscent of nature's marvels. Moreover, the water is heated entirely through natural geothermal processes. They also have their own 7-step ritual which is a must try!

Fontana Steam Baths

Since 1929, locals and tourists alike have been enjoying the healing powers of the natural steam waters at Fontana Steam Baths. There are three outdoor mineral baths named Lauga, Sæla, and Viska, all connected and varying in size, depth and temperature. There’s also saunas and steam baths where hot and healing steam simmers directly from the ground through grids in the cabin floors of the three traditional steam rooms which will relax and energise like nothing else.

Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Just a 45 minute scenic drive from Reykjavik, Hvammsvik Hot Springs is one of the newer geothermal spas in Iceland. Eight geothermal pools, encircled by rocks, are tucked into the hills spanning over 1200 acres of picturesque landscape. The pools offer a range of temperatures, from 35 to 40 C, and come in different sizes. Additionally, there's a steam bath for relaxation. Yet, the hot spring experience is only one facet of the myriad of activities at Hvammsvik. In the summer, you're invited to take a refreshing dip in the ocean, and there are regular paddleboarding sessions throughout the season.

Husafel Canyon Baths

Nestled amidst the rugged Icelandic wilderness, Húsafell Canyon Baths beckon you to indulge in a tranquil and secluded retreat. Despite being a recent addition to Iceland's array of geothermal spas, it has swiftly captured the hearts of both locals and travelers. Its secluded location, understated elegance, and breathtaking surroundings are its irresistible charms. Set against the backdrop of a vast volcanic canyon, towering peaks, and glaciers, these opulent baths offer a truly immersive experience.

GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths

Geosea transcends being merely a geothermal bathing destination—it embodies an immersive journey into the historical essence of a quaint fishing village in North Iceland, where the utilisation of the Earth's geothermal resources dates back centuries. It offers a rare fusion of mineral-rich seawater and natural heat emanating from the Earth's core. Perched gracefully on a cliffside facing westward, overlooking Skjalfandi Bay and the Arctic Circle to the north, these baths provide an unparalleled vantage point for whale watching and witnessing the enchanting northern lights.

Forest Lagoon

Forest Lagoon is a new geothermal spa located in Vaðlaskógur forest, couple minutes' car drive from Akureyri. At the Forest Lagoon, you'll have views overlooking one of Iceland's longest fjords, Eyjafjörður. The spa's unique location surrounded by birch and pine trees truly sets it apart. During the visit to the Forest Lagoon guests will experience the view, the tranquility and the energy of Vaðlaskógur, the forest that surrounds the baths.

Vok Baths

Experience the age-old Icelandic tradition of bathing in a natural geothermal pool. Vok Baths is located on the bank of Urridavatn lake, only a few minutes from the town of Egilsstadir. At Vok Baths you will find, floating geothermal pools with infinity view, two on shore hot pools, a sauna, cold water spray tunnel, tea bar, an in-water pool bar, and the on-site restaurant, Vok Bistro. The warm water flowing from the ground at Urridavatn lake is so pure that it is the only geothermal water in Iceland certified as drinkable. You can taste the water and refresh your body at our complimentary tea bar.
