The Ultimate Guide to the Blue Lagoon

Warm waters, clay masks and breathtaking scenery, there’s a reason the Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a must-see during your trip to the Land of Fire and Ice.

What is the Blue Lagoon in Iceland?

The milky blue water of the Blue Lagoon is something everyone should see at least one in their lifetime. The body of water is a geothermal spa found on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland. It is man made using the runoff water from the Svartsengi geothermal power plant which runs into the lava fields and into the mineral-rich mud lines of the Blue Lagoon foundation. The combination of the warm water and the rich mud, which can be literally scraped off the bottom of the ground and used as a natural clay mask, is believed to fully rejuvenate the body, mind, and skin.,

The geothermal water is typically between 37° and 40° C (98-104°F). Alongside the main attraction, there are several additional amenities to enjoy at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. There’s a mask bar placed directly in the middle of the lagoon as well as an in-water drinks bar so you can stay refreshed and hydrated as you relax. Out of the water, you’ll find a sauna and steam room, several restaurants and a Blue Lagoon skincare shop where you can purchase eye creams, moisturisers and face masks created from the water’s bioactive treasures.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon

You can find the Blue Lagoon a 45 minute drive from Reykjavik, and 20 minutes from Keflavik Airport on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Many people choose to visit the Blue Lagoon straight after they have landed or just before their flight to save time during their trip. From either Keflavik airport or Reykjavik, simply take Reykjanesbraut (Highway 41) to Grindavíkurvegur (Highway 43) and follow the signs to Blue Lagoon.

What do you need to take to the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon offers several different packages, some of which include complimentary towels and robes. If you opt for some of their cheaper packages, here’s a full list of everything you need to bring to the Blue Lagoon. Note: shampoo and conditioner is available in the shower rooms.

  • Swimwear
  • Sunglasses
