Facilities Available at Fontana Steam Baths
The Pools
There are three outdoor mineral baths at Fontana Steam Baths, named Lauga, Sæla, and Viska. Connected and varying in size, depth and temperature the pools are perfect for relaxing, gently swimming and leaving behind all your troubles. Viska, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings. From within the pools, you can find playful artwork in stone made by Icelandic artist Erla Thorarinsdottir.
The Steam Baths
As you sit in the steam baths, hot and healing steam simmers directly from the ground through grids in the cabin floors of the three traditional steam rooms which will relax and energise like nothing else. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow you to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring right underneath, creating a natural and unique experience.
The Sauna
A huge draw for many at the Fontana Steam Baths is the Finnish-style sauna. Named Ylur, the room has a lower humidity compared to the steam rooms with a temperature between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F). Through the large glass window, you can enjoy the beautiful lake at a distance while you let yourself sweat out all the stresses and anxieties of everyday life.
The Underground Bakery
Those looking for a unique experience to pair with their day of relaxation should time their visit to the Fontana Steam Baths to see how they make the bread. Using a historic recipe, the bread is placed in a hole in the warm ground and left to bake for 24 hours. A walk to the geothermal bakery starts every day at 11.45 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. from the reception at Laugarvatn Fontana. Guests will experience the geothermal bakery first hand and see as they dig out a pot of fresh bread from the hot black sand. Guests are offered to taste the bread, served hot from the ground with Icelandic butter.
