Restaurants & Food in Iceland

There are over 80 fine restaurants in Reykjavik serving many of the countries specialty dishes. Some of the best fish in the world can be tried at the restaurants around the harbour.

In today's Iceland, you can find almost anything your culinary heart desires. Restaurants around the country offer a wide variety of both foreign and Icelandic dishes, inspired by the ingredients found in nature. Most traditional Icelandic dishes will contain the likes of fish, lamb and the Icelandic skyr.

As an island nation, nothing has been more vital to this the people’s survival than fishing. Most restaurants in Iceland serve ‘fish of the day’ and the country is dotted with numerous seafood restaurants, serving mostly cod, haddock, salmon, and monkfish. Skyr is another well-known Icelandic food that is a cultured dairy product with the consistency of yogurt.

The Icelandic hot dog is another famous food that many tourists wish to try on their visits with Bill Clinton even famously calling them “the best hot dogs in the world”. For those that are more experimental, we recommend trying the likes of Hákarl, otherwise known as fermented shark. Hákarl is often served in cubes on cocktail sticks and first-timers are advised to pinch their nostrils whilst taking their first bite, since the smell is actually much stronger than the taste!

For vegetarians and vegans, you will be able to find several restaurants in Reykjavik that choose not to serve any meat and there are also lots of supermarkets in the city where you can stock up for any fly drive adventures. If you are staying in an apartment in Reykjavik and choose to cook there, the best and most affordable supermarkets are Budget and Krónan.

Nightlife Reykjavik has an extremely active nightlife. The surprising variety of pubs offer a great night out and most serve meals as well as wines and beers. There are also several nightclubs, which open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Other nights the nightclubs will close at 1am."The Smokeless City", is the most northerly capital in the World. Reykjavik is a modern capital with international standard hotels and restaurants. It also has a remarkable old-world charm and there are many old buildings which add to this character. Reykjavik is thought to be the cleanest capital city in the world
