Top Restaurants to Try in All of Iceland

Yes there's the northern lights, whale watching and the Blue Lagoon, but another huge draw of Iceland is the food. Here's some of the best places to eat in Iceland...

HVER Restaurant, Hveragerdi

HVER Restaurant is located in Hotel Örk Hveragerði. It is a first class restaurant with a la carte menu, as well as group menus. It is the perfect place to end your day after a fun-filled excursion, whether that be a trip to the geothermal park, the hot springs of Reykjadalur or one of the several nearby museums. HVER Restaurant´s menu is sophisticated, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients featuring dishes like slow cooked grilled lamb and grilled nut steak.

KROST, Reykjavik

Located in the Klemmur Food Hall on Laugavegur in Reykjavik, KROST is a grill and wine bar serving a delicious range of dishes for those wanting a dining experience a little different to your average ‘sit down’ meal. The menu is divided into three main sections: hamburgers, small plates and mains and promises all ingredients are locally sourced. For us, the KROSTI burger is a must have!

Bryggjan Cafe, Grindavik

Bryggjan Grindavik is a Fisherman’s Cafe/Restaurant by the Grindavik Harbour in South West Iceland. The building was originally built in 1980 a by the brothers Kristinn and Adalgeir Johansen to house their Net Making Business.  As the years passed and times changed, in 2009  the brothers transformed a portion of the building into a little cafe called Bryggjan (Pier).  Since then, this little café has won over the hearts and minds of the locals as well as travellers traveling through Grindavik. They offer traditional Icelandic dishes including fish stew, lamb shank and blue mussels.

Gallery Fiskur, Reykjavik

If you’ve been to Iceland before, you’ll know that fish dishes are some of the locals’ favourites and Gallery Fiskur is one of the finest spots in Reykjavik for such meals. Owned and operated by father Ásmundur and son Kristófer, the pair were originally fishmongers who after eight years in the trade decided it was time to share their expertise on a menu.

Drangar Restaurant, Vik

Drangar Restaurant opened during the Summer of 2018 alongside the popular hotel, Hotel Kria. Situated on the south coast of Iceland, Vik is home to many travellers crossing the ever wonderful region of South Iceland and enticing everyone that passes in, Drangar restaurant prides itself on only the best quality seasonal ingredients. We recommend trying dishes of cooked lamb, cod and smoked haddock as well as the extensive wine menu.

Reykjavik Kitchen, Reykjavik

Those searching for true Icelandic cuisine need look no further than the Reykjavik Kitchen. Guaranteeing exceptionally well cooked food including grilled cod, cured salmon and lamb steak with a warm atmosphere and stunning views of Laugavegur, this spot has won the hearts of locals and tourist alike.

Bryggjan Restaurant, Akureyri

A restaurant ingrained into the history of Akureyri, Bryggjan restaurant is found within a house that has stood in the town for more than 140 years known as the oldest house in Oddeyri. Those passing through the north Icelandic town can enjoy a fine selection of traditional food here from both their lunch and dinner menus with vegan options, pizzas, burgers and salmon.

Gamli Baukur, Husavik

In the touristic town of Husavik, specially known for its whale safaris and museum, Gamli Baukur restaurant is a really traditional restaurant serving tasty cooked grilled cod, fish soup and baked lamb. The fish comes straight from boats landing their catch in Husavík and from local fish farms while all the meat and vegetablea are from farms in the region. There is both indoor and outdoor seating with the latter offering pleasant views of the town.
