Everything New Arriving in Akureyri, Iceland in 2022

If you’re planning on exploring north Iceland and plan on stopping in Akureyri, here’s some of just a few things you can do in the area. Everything listed is what’s new for 2022/23…

New Activities in Akureyri

Forest Lagoon

A new geothermal spa, was opened spring 2022 at the opposite side of the fjord, in Vaðlaskógur forest approx. 3 km from Akureyri Town Centre. The facility consists of 1.300 square-meter complex that includes a bistro, two infinity pools with two swim-up bars, a cold tub, and a sauna. The facility can accommodate up to 200 visitors at a time and will be open daily from 10:00 in the morning until 24:00 in the evening. Single admission ISK 5800

Zipline Akureyri

The company takes you on an adventurous ride through a stunning river canyon in the middle of Akureyri town. Five ziplines over a rustling river and steep cliff walls with a mix of light hiking and storytelling. This is a guided tour in small groups and takes under 2 hours. The tour starts and ends at the Zipline Akureyri headquarters in Glerárgil by Hlíðarbraut. Closed winter. Web:

Hop on – Hop off bus

The bus is run on cruise ship days. Departures every 1 hour, each round takesv45 minutes with 11 stops along the route. Video with information in English about the town on board.

goHusky

Offers various dog sledding experience with huskies in Akureyri area. Husky tours on sledge. Also, home visits and hiking with husky. Aprox 10 minutes from Akureyri in Glæsibær.

Akureyri Riding tours

Akureyri Riding tours is based about 10 km from Akureyri (about 10 min drive). They offer short toursv(1 hour), suitable for all ages.

New Akureyri Accommodation

Hótel Hálönd

A new self-service hotel just opened, autumn 2022. Offering 24 double rooms with a sofa bed and private facilities. Each room is 26 m2 . No breakfast/restaurant service but each room has a fridge, coffee machine, table and 4 chairs. One hall seating 40 persons is available on site for groups. A closed drying cabinet is on the ground floor for each room, ski/bike storage, and a laundry room. Hot tubs are available for guest outside the hotel. An additional new hotel adjacent to this one is planned to open in 2023 with 30 rooms.

Hotel Akureyri – Hafnarstræti 67

The hotel is operating in 2 buildings. Skjaldborg 19 rooms and Dynheimar 16 rooms, also offering apartments in nearby buildings. The hotel offers contactless and fast check-in and check-out. Room and pin number is sent to the guest on the day of arrival. The hotel operates a hydroponic farm inside one of the hotel buildings, Urban Farm Akureyri. There they produce fresh and tasty products year-round using clean water and 100% renewable energy. Guests are invited to visit the farm and enjoy its product at the hotel’s bistro.

Lyklaskipti Apartments

A real estate company offering 6 apartments in Akureyri fitting for 2 up to 10 persons centrally in Akureyri.

New Restaurants & Cafés in Akureyri

Majó

A small restaurant in the oldest house in Akureyri, Laxdalshús. It is a family run with art on display by one of the owners. The restaurant is specialising in sushi and Asian inspired food. Opening hours are sporadically, with a calendar for two months at a time. Groups from 14 to max 34 persons can request special openings.

Ketilkaffi

Café with pastries, light meals, soups, cocktails & wines in Akureyri Art Museum. Seating max 40. Also catering for events and groups both within the Art Museum and outside. Open all year.

Eyja vínstofa & bistro + Mysa

New wine bar and bistro opened in one of the old historical buildings in the centre of town spring 2022. The restaurant has focus on bistro food with Icelandic ingrediencies as well as nature wines, classical wines, cocktails, Icelandic beers etc. Seating 28. In the same building restaurant Mysa. A restaurant offering new Nordic Cuisine tasting menu. Seating 20.

Garún / Bistro Bar in Hof Cultural & Conference house

In spring 2022 Garún took over the restaurant and a café in Hof. Open daily from 10.00-18.00. The bistro/bar has a variation of Icelandic classic sweets cakes and breads, Lunch buffet Monday-Friday 11.30-13.30. Catering and bar service in connection to events in the building.

Restaurant Brekka – Hrísey island

New owners have taken over this old establishment which has been closed for a while. Emphasis on seafood prepared onsite and seafood buffet in the evening. Opening hours 12.00 – 22.00 during summer.

Kaffi Ilmur

Has reopened with new owners and is now run all year. Café + cakes, breakfast, lunch weekdays &brunch during weekends. Open daily 8.00-18.00

Kvikkí

Salatsjoppan has changed name and owners. Has now the name Kvikkí and is offering salads and sandwiches.

North

A restaurant located in Hotel Akureyri, seating 20. Open for breakfast daily 7.00-11.00 and dinner Wed-Sat from 18.00 – 00.00.

Jaðar Bistró

Located at the Golf course, 5 min from the town centre. The restaurant opened this spring and is open to public during summer and for groups, meetings, and events during winter.
