Its Happening Again: Another Volcanic Eruption in Iceland

A new eruption began on July 10th 2023 on Reykjanes Peninsula, just northwest of the sites of the 2021 and 2022 eruptions in Fagradalsfjall. Is this becoming a yearly tradition?

On July 10, a fissure eruption started on the Reykjanes Peninsula, just 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Reykjavík. Thankfully, it does not pose any immediate danger to residents or infrastructure but the  National Police Commissioner is urging people not to go near the site. Scientists are still working to assess the situation and there is considerable risk of gas pollution in the area. No ash has been detected and at this time there is no impact on air traffic.

Although it is not advised to visit the area alone, you can witness the incredible eruption from a distance as part of one of our guided Volcanic Wonders of Reykjanes Geopark tours. We'll take you on a magical, professionally guided tour to discover the new eruption site in stunning landscapes. It's going to be an epic, once-in-a-lifetime expedition!

You will witness the raw power of nature as you stand overlooking an active volcano eruption. Of course, from a safe distance! Sounds like fun? Don't forget to pack your camera, sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, a packet lunch, and plenty of water! Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, so it's always a good idea to be prepared for different conditions. The difficulty level for the hike is challenge with a total hiking distance of around 17-20 kilometres in rough terrain. It takes around 2-3 hours each way, up to 6 hours total.
