Volcanic Eruption Reported near Reykjavik, Iceland

On 3 August 2022, a new fissure eruption opened up slightly north of last year's eruption at Fagradalsfjall mountain on Reykjanes Peninsula.

Icelandic volcanos are must-see's for many tourists visiting the country but it only is only the ones that erupt that tend to make the news, like the notorious Eyjafjallajökull in 2010. The latter made headlines everywhere. stopping stopping all air traffic over Europe for several days by spewing ash in the air. The latest Icelandic volcano making the news is Fagradalsfjall which can be seen erupting on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Many tourists out there have already driven up to see the volcano up close. The eruption site is only within an hour's drive from Reykjavík and about 30 minutes from Keflavík airport. While it is breathtaking to see up close, we do advise you approach with caution - it is a volcano after all!

Here's some of our best advice when visiting the volcano eruption for yourself:

  • Check SafeTravel.is. for hazard alerts at the eruption site and your other travels in Iceland.
  • Avoid the gas. Volcanic gasses can be poisonous. Even though the eruption is paused, there is still degassing from the lava. Avoid staying in depressions in the landscape and leave the area immediately if you feel any discomfort. Please note that children are more sensitive to gas.
  • Do not walk on the lava! Even though it can look as if it has cooled, there may be burning hot lava underneath a thin crust. If the crust breaks, you will fall in.
  • Weather changes can be sudden. Always expect cold, wet, windy, and icy conditions, even if you begin your hike in good weather.
