The Best Glaciers to see in Iceland

Iceland is known as 'The Land of Fire and Ice' for having both glaciers and volcanoes dotted around the island. Glaciers only form on land when snow stays long enough in one place to turn into ice. Over years, centuries even, the snow is compressed into thick ice masses.

Vatnajokull Glacier

Iceland’s largest glacier and the second largest glacier in the Europe, Vatnajokull is a must-see on everyone’s trip to Iceland. It covers 8% of Iceland’s landmass and is the central feature of the Vatnajokull National park, found in the southwest of Iceland. There are several tours ways to see Vatnajokull glacier. You can see it from glacier hiking from Skaftafell, from boat tours in the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and through ice caving tours. One of our most popular tours to see Vatnajokull glacier is our Jokulsarlon Super Jeep Day Tour which takes you in a luxury SUV across the picturesque southern Iceland coastline passing the villages of Selfoss, Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur as well as Skogafoss, a mighty and much photographed waterfall on the south coast.

Langjokull Glacier

The second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjokull Glacier means ‘long glacier’ due to its oblong shape. Found to the west of the Icelandic highlands, Langjokull is within ‘The Golden Circle’ of attractions in Iceland. Snowmobiling tours a great thing to do here as they let you cover a lot of ground in a short space of time and you’ll catch several views of Langjokull Glacier on your adventure. There’s also a man-made ice cave to explore for those that aren’t too claustrophobic! One of most popular Langjokull Glacier tours is the Golden Circle & Langjokull Snowmobiling tour which combines the full Golden Circle route, including Thingvellir National Park, Geysir and Gulfoss with an hour snowmobile ride on Langjokull glacier.

Eyjafjallajokull Glacier

Although slightly smaller in size, this glacier is just as famous as any other Icelandic glacier since it was the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano which had the whole of the country at a standstill back in 2010. The 100km-wide ice cap in south Iceland is located just west of the larger Myrdalsjokull glacier and it can be seen from the ring road in clear weather. If you’d like to see Eyjafjallajokull for yourself, there are several hiking trails in the area as well as many super jeep and snowmobile tours to enjoy. If you like the sound of both, check out our South Coast & Glacier Hiking tour which includes a glacier hike up to see the magnificent ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses of Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

Myrdalsjokull Glacier

Myrdalsjokull Glacier is the fourth largest glacier in Iceland and can be found right next to Eyjafjallajokull glacier in South Iceland. It covers nearly 600 square kilometres (232 square miles), and its highest peak is almost 1500 meters tall. It is most well-known for sitting atop the notorious and explosive volcano, Katla. Yet again there are several tours that will take you to see Myrdalsjokull glacier but one we always recommend to our customers is a private Glacier SuperJeep tour. You’ll be collected from your Reykjavik hotel before heading across the south coast to the base of the glacier. It's the perfect spot to see some of Iceland’s most beautiful nature. On the way back you will stop by the great waterfalls of South Iceland, Skógafoss waterfall and Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
