Grand driving tour of Iceland in 15 days

What's included: Explores Iceland's ring road with Western Fjords

This itinerary is the piece de la resitance and takes you all around Iceland in 2 weeks and also includes the Western Fjords the hand which protrudes in the North West of Iceland.

What you'll do

Day 1: Arrive in Iceland

Fly in from your chosen UK airport and land safely at Keflavik.

Pick up your car hire from the airport and drive to your hotel in Reykjavik. Take the afternoon to explore the capital and enjoy some tasty Icelandic food for dinner.

Check into Hotel Reykjavik Marina.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

Drive towards the Golden Circle and explore the area. Combining history, culture and extraordinary nature, you can see Thingvellir National Park and walk among the geological wonders of the fissure zone and in the footsteps of the early Viking settlers where the Althingi parliament was founded. You can then see the Gullfoss and feel the mist of glacial water as it cascades down one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.  Finally, you can witness the Geysir and hear the bubbling of the mud pots, smell the sulphur in the air and watch in awe as the geyser Strokkur blasts boiling water into the air.

Day 3: Snaefelsness Peninsula 

Drive along the coast road in a westerly direction passing under the Hvalfjordur and then onto the Snaefelsness Peninsula via Borgarnes. Dont forget to visit Kirkjufell is the most photographed mountain in Iceland and sit's on the north coast peninsula of Snaefelsness.

Stay overnight at Varmaland Hotel in Snaefelsness.

Day 4: Snaefelsness Peninsula 

Spend the day exploring the peninsular of Snaefelsness taking in the unique scenary. 

Stay overnight at Egilsen hotel.

Day 5: Western Fjords

This morning you will catch the ferry from Stykisholmur to the western fjords. Once you arrive you will have time to explore the immediate area before checking into you hotel.

Stay overnight at hotel Flokalundur.

Day 6: Western Fjords

Today drive north through the western fjords, here you can visit the waterfall Dynjandi, the pink sands beach of Raudsandur and watch the puffins at Latrabjarg, there are also plenty of hot springs to visit.

Stay overnight at Hotel Isafordur.

Day 7: Akureyri

Today you drive to Akureyri. Quite a drive from the western fjords so you will see plenty of scenary. Akureyri is nicknamed the capital of the north so there is plenty to see and do. Outdoor thermal swimming pools are popular, there are plenty of cafe's and bar's to relax in, museum's, whale watching or other boat trips'.

Day 8: Myvatn

Leave Akureyri and drive east toward Myvatn exploring the famous waterfall of Godafoss on the way. Perhaps you would like to visit Husavik and spend the afternoon whale watching, return to your hotel and check in.

Day 9: Myvatn

Today you can drive to lake Myvatn. Lake Mývatn is a part of a sightseeing route named the Diamond Circle, that also visits the town of Husavik, the canyon of Asbyrgi, and Dettifoss waterfall and the Hljodaklettar rocks. There are also the Myvatn nature baths basically a northen Blue Lagoon to visit.

Day 10: Egilsstadir 

Drive toward's Egilsstadir the main town before the Eastern Fjord's which make's it a great base for exploration.

Stay overnight at Lake Hotel and Spa Egilsstadir.

Day 11: Skaftafell 

Today drive the wonderful coast road to Skaftafell and take in this amazing scenery. Skaftafell is a nature reserve located in Vatnajökull National Park in the South East of Iceland, ther's plenty of natural areas's to visit such as Svartifoss waterfall, the diamond beach, so called because of the lumps of ice that wash up onto the sands and the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon.

Stay overnight at Hotel Skaftafell.

Day 12: Vik

Vik is your next destination the most southerly town in Iceland. Once at Vik you can visit two of Iceland's most famous waterfall's Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Seljalandsfoss is one of the few waterfall's that you can walk all the way around, going round the back of the waterfall (only in the summer), be prepared to get wet! From Vik you can also visit the black sands beach.

Stay overnight at Hotel Kria Vik.

Day 13: Katla Ice Cave

Today experience another adventure with the Katla Ice cave Tour! Walk down to the tour office a few minutes away from the hotel to take the tour.

Day 14: Reykjanesbær 

Drive to the seaside in the town of Reykjanesbær where you can check into the hotel Vogar. From here there is a short drive to the Blue Lagoon where you can relax and reflect on the amazing journey you have just undertaken.

Stay overnight at Hotel Vogar.

Day 15: Fly Home

Drive to the airport and drop the car hire off

Fly back to the UK.
