Berjaya Hofn Hotel, open since 1961. Ours is quite a unique story, rooted in the nation’s inherent characteristics that still to this day define our standard of service. If the somewhat harsh nature has taught us anything through the centuries, it is practicality and hospitality towards strangers. Therefore, it was perhaps inevitable that the boarding schools in the countryside, vacant during summer breaks, would assume a new role as the increasing intercontinental air travel in the 1950’s made Iceland a more viable destination for tourists.
Idyllic Lake Mývatn is an hour by car and the Hrísey Island bird sanctuary is just a short ferry ride away. Nearby are Kjarnaskógur and Vaglaskógur woodlands and top salmon, trout and sea fishing. In early summer, the sight of the sun on the horizon at midnight is like no other.
On the doorstep of Berjaya Hofn Hote at Höfn you can feel the force of nature from Europe's largest glacier - the 8,100 km (5,200 sq. miles) expanse of Vatnajökull, covering 8% of Iceland. There is also the smaller Skálafellsjökull glacier - gear up and climb it, hike it, drive upon it! The nearby Skaftafell National Park is a must-see, as well as Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, the spectacular setting for the James Bond movie Die Another Day.
